WHAT WE LOVE...

With arguably the best location in Bristol, Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin offers a grandstand view of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's magnificent Clifton Suspension Bridge, which soars above the River Avon. Since being completely revamped by the reliably creative Hotel du Vin group, the 'Avon Gorge' has became a destination boutique hotel worthy of its position; it's also close to "villagey" Clifton, the city's most attractive quarter. Taking the best of a Grade II-listed building, the makeover has also introduced some lovely contemporary touches, such as the glass-walled restaurant, which is known for its steaks, and some witty decorative features. The bold coloured bedrooms fit the bill too. A hotel - and a view - to savour.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love walking over the Clifton Suspension Bridge and glancing back at the hotel or seeing the bridge at sunset from the hotel terrace.

Take a walk around the shops and restaurants of Clifton Village or a 15-minute walk down to the Harbourside where you'll find the aquarium and the famous Bristol Hippodrome.
By car: around 1 hour 30 minutes from Exeter, 3 hours from London and 4 hours from York.
By train: trains run to Bristol Temple Meads from Exeter St Davids (1 hour), London Paddington (1 hour 40 minutes) and York (3 hours 50 minutes). The hotel is a 15-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com

Rooms

We love the modern spin on some of the paintings - an 18th-century lady listening to an iPod, for instance. The Deluxe Balcony rooms are rather special as you can sit out with a drink with views of the gorge or Brunel's famous Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Food & Drink

Having breakfast or dinner, on the terrace and gazing at Brunel's striking bridge never fails to amaze. The steaks are particularly good here, try the dry-aged ribeye - but be warned, portions can be big!

Goram & Vincent: formal fine dining, classic French and modern British cuisine. Open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Dinner mains from £12.50.
The Lounge: relaxed, bar menu, wines, spirits, cocktails and cigars. Plates from £8.95.
