The inn is a landmark building right in the heart of the lovely little town of Chipping Campden, from where the Cotswold Way long-distance footpath starts. Look out for the workshop of Hart Silversmiths down the way on Sheep Street.

The Noel Arms has a great sense of history and the atmosphere of a tavern. It is even said to have been a sanctuary for Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Walkers and those enjoying a value-for-money break will love it here.

The hotel has eight dog-friendly rooms, and dogs can join their owners in the coffee shop, on the terrace and in the restaurant conservatory.

We love the 1657 suite, so-called because the figures for this year are carved into the magnificent four-poster bed in the room. One corridor has a 1930s telephone switchboard on display, adding quirky character.

The Sri Lankan breakfast dish of egg curry with coconut roti is delicious. We love the yellow seafood curry with monkfish, king prawn, squid and cumin rice at dinner.

The restaurant: traditional British dishes, local produce, award-winning curries. The bar menu is served 12-9.30pm with a specials menu available 12-3pm and 6-9.30pm. Mains from £12.50.
