Hotel Review
Hillthwaite, Windermere, Lake District
Tucked away above busy Windermere, and with uninterrupted views over the lake and fells, Hillthwaite is close but not too close to the bustling heart of the Lake District. A sprawling Victorian villa, Hillthwaite has been turned into a contemporary country-house hotel with stylish looks yet comfort in all the right places. The atmosphere is relaxed rather than look-at-me - ideal for those after a quiet break where good service is valued. Plenty of lounges, plus the dining areas, major on the fab views, plus there's a broad terrace above the hotel's rolling gardens. You need to stump up extra to get a bedroom with good views, but all follow the same sleek décor. Dining is classic British, smartly served, and there's a small indoor pool.

People who want a smart, centrally located but peaceful hotel without fussy formality but keeping the best of traditional service will enjoy staying here. We loved the fact we could always find a plump sofa to flop into with a book, or just to gaze at the views.
