Hotel Review
Quinta do Furão, Santana, Madeira
Quinta do Furão started life in 1993 as a country restaurant that became so popular that a spacious hotel was added four years later. Madeirans like to come here for a slap-up Sunday lunch of bife caldeirão verde (beef fillet and Roquefort cheese wrapped in puff pastry) while most international visitors book it as a base for walking - only to be pleasantly surprised by the spectacular clifftop location and enveloping vineyards. With its north coast location, tasty fare, relaxing balcony rooms and leisure facilities, this is a good choice for a twin-centre holiday combined with Funchal. Popular for weddings and events, the hotel has a sense of humour too - 'furão' means 'ferret' in Portuguese, a reference to the wily landowner who previously lived here.

Style & Character
Perfect for independent travellers doing a round-island drive, walkers, foodies and wine-lovers - in September guests can participate in the harvesting and treading of grapes (for a fee). Renovated in 2020, the restful, well-appointed rooms successfully mix the contemporary and the antique, for example with a light, modern armchair set beside a dark wood dressing table.

Rooms
The top floor rooms in the main building have an attic cosiness with a sloping ceiling, thick wooden beams and lord-of-it-all views. We love sitting on the balcony with a cup of tea, enjoying the early morning sunshine and a magnificent tableau of ocean, cliffs and vineyard.

Food & Drink
We love the warm mood, fabulous smells and an extensive dinner menu that makes it hard to decide what to order. Tip: portions are generous so consider sharing. Our favourite dish is the house-smoked trout with local honey and pink peppercorns, followed by slow-cooked lamb with almond-crusted sweet potatoes.
The restaurant: Madeiran and international cuisine. Dishes include black scabbard fillet and slow-cooked leg of lamb. Mains from €19.50.
Pub: cosy restaurant, drinks.
Four Seasons: drinks and cocktails.
Wine Cellar: wine tastings, local wines to buy.
