WHAT WE LOVE...

What was once a large Edwardian country house has become a hugely popular pub and restaurant with 20 stylish, boutique rooms, in the heart of the New Forest. Walkers and cyclists flock to it for sustenance after enjoying the surrounding open expanse of heath and woodland. Dog owners grab a bowl and some treats and settle their four-legged friends in front of one of the roaring log fires or wood-burning stoves. Sunday roasts are legendary, as is live entertainment, with a popular garden Shakespeare production in the summer. Rooms have period proportions: high ceilings, bay windows and glorious forest views. Outside, wooden tables tumble down the garden, which ends with a secret adventure playground for the kids.

Dog-owners looking for a base for long country walks will love it here. The vase of fresh flowers and wicker basket of apples on the reception desk are a nice touch.

Dogs are warmly welcomed in the pub, and the bedrooms with hard floors are dog-friendly. We love the generosity displayed in the free dog biscuits and complimentary wellies.
