WHAT WE LOVE...

In a prime position in the jolly market town of Hexham, opposite the 12th-century abbey and next to the Market Place, this Victorian townhouse hotel is well-placed for people watching from its ground-floor bar-restaurant - a popular place with locals and residents alike. Like the rest of the hotel, the open-plan ground floor has a breezy contemporary style with bright wallpapers and scrubbed tables. Bedrooms in the original building, to the front, have a little more pizazz than those in the modern rear extension which tend to be more formulaic, though still have all the same amenities. Apart from its location, food is one of the hotel's high points with a well-priced menu of Modern English dishes served up from an open kitchen that all adds to the buzz and fun of the meal.

Style & Character

People who like to be in the heart of things and want a convivial sort of place to return to after a day's shopping or sight-seeing will love it here. The open-plan ground floor, which segues from lounge and reception through to bar and restaurant, has a buzzy, convivial feel.

Service & Facilities

If you're a people watcher, the ground-floor bar and lounge is a great place to hang out.

Rooms

The top-floor rooms have some of the best views. All double rooms have king size beds, filtered water and Aromatherapy Associates bathroom products.

Standard Room, Superior Room
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, filtered water, TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

We loved the chance to sit at a pavement table with a drink before dinner. It's the sort of place where only a Continental aperitif will do - fortunately, they do a mean Negroni as well as an Aperol spritz.

Restaurant: modern British cuisine, locally-sourced ingredients, seasonal menus. Mains include pan-roasted trout, lamb cutlets and short rib of beef. All-day dining, open daily.
