WHAT WE LOVE...

Whichever direction you arrive from, you'll get good views en route to this four-star hotel, just outside the Peak District National Park boundary. To the west there's open moorland and to the east are valley views. At journey's end is a traditional 18th-century inn with a number of sensitive extensions built from local sandstone and slate. The original pub, with many nooks and crannies to hide out in, is home to a bar stocking local ales and a restaurant with many awards under its belt, while the spacious bedrooms are in a newer, purpose-built annexe. Behind them is an attractive garden, where hundreds of young woodland trees continue to grow.

Style & Character

Proximity to the M1 makes it a popular stopover on north-south journeys and many celebs have stayed here while filming in the Peak District. We love the attractive new Garden Room, which features rustic chic décor, cosy dining booths and a large terrace looking over the lake.

Service & Facilities

The garden attracts plenty of wildlife, from swallows swooping above the lawns to dragonflies and butterflies flittering around the lake - what a treat!

Rooms

Everything about the hotel wing feels spacious, from the large reception and wide corridors to the bedrooms, all generously sized. Our favourite room is Hardwick, one of four suites, on the first floor, with French windows and a Juliet balcony overlooking the lake.

Superior, Accesible, Family rooms, Hardwick, Devonshire, Chatsworth, Haddon suites
Facilities include: Hypnos king-size bed, ensuite with under floor heating and heated mirrors, TV, free Wi-Fi, countryside views, tea and coffee-making facilities

Food & Drink

The hotel kitchen uses organic meat and eggs from the owner's farm, and grows vegetables, herbs and fruit on site. At breakfast, the Eggs Royale are a good start to the day, with a well-made hollandaise and plenty of smoked salmon.

Red Lion: relaxed, modern British cuisine, local produce. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Dinner mains from £16.
