WHAT WE LOVE...

Confusingly, there are several Devonshire Arms scattered around the Peak District (best double-check the sat nav before you set off) but this is one of the most appealing. It's a traditional country inn in the heart of Pilsley, a pretty little village of sandstone cottages, most of which were built in the late-18th and early 19th century to house workers from nearby Chatsworth. You won't find full hotel facilities here but you do get hearty pub food (much of it locally sourced) and very comfortable bedrooms. Some are over the inn itself, the rest in a next-door farmhouse, but all get the important details right, from the thick mattresses topped with fine white linens to the cut-above biscuits on the in-room tea tray.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love stocking up on local produce and other foodie treats in the excellent Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop, 350 yards from the pub.

The Devonshire Arms is in the sleepy village of Pilsley, with plenty of walks in the surrounding countryside. There are bus connections to both Bakewell and Sheffield.
By car: the pub is 40 mins from Sheffield, 1 hour 25 mins from Manchester and 3 hours 30 mins from London. There is free parking on-site.
By train: London St Pancras to Chesterfield takes 1 hour 45 mins. The hotel is a 25-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

Walkers, dog-owners, country pub-lovers - in fact, anyone looking for a quiet, comfortable and conveniently central Peak District base will like it here. Sit outside on the trestle tables in front of the pub to soak up the sunshine and admire the cottage garden over the road.

Service & Facilities

Leafing through the Villager Jim books in the small residents lounge - fantastic wildlife shots from an award-winning local photographer. Dogs are welcome in the annexe rooms, dog towels and bowls are available, and staff can recommend dog-friendly places to visit.

Rooms

Hill Top, one of the four-poster annexe rooms, feels particularly light and pretty, and has a good view out over the village. We love the little local details, like Chatsworth biscuits on the tea tray and a bag of Peak District fudge on the bedside table.

Petite Double, Classic Double, Deluxe Rooms, Four-Poster Farmhouse Rooms
Facilities include: ensuite with walk-in or shower over bath, free toiletries, hairdryer, duck feather and down duvets and pillows, TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities, bottled water, table, chair

Food & Drink

There's a selection of local ales behind the bar and a good choice of gins, with recommendations for accompanying tonics. Sweets were a treat, with a nicely wobbly coconut panacotta and a chocolate fondant that was perfectly gooey in the middle.

The Inn: produce from the Chatsworth Estate, local cask ales, hearty pub food, sandwiches. Open every day for lunch and dinner. Mains from £14.95.
