WHAT WE LOVE...

Harington's is an enjoyably quirky little hotel. It takes its name from Sir John Harington - a godson of Queen Elizabeth I - who owned the land where the hotel stands and is famed for inventing the first flushing toilet! The three interconnected Georgian buildings have lots of natural character, and the 13 cosy and well-equipped bedrooms and public areas are decorated with idiosyncratic flourishes. For example, a wall in one of the bedrooms is covered with a bold feature wallpaper featuring birds, butterflies and flowers. Other selling points include a hot tub on a patio courtyard (bookable for private use), excellent breakfasts, a well-stocked, help-yourself bar and the superb location, on a picturesque cobbled street right in the centre of Bath.

THE DETAILS

THE LOCATION

Located in the centre of the city and nestled on a cobblestone lane that's a strong contender for the most photogenic thoroughfare in Bath. With a pub and cocktail bar across the street, expect some night-time noise. The popular Canary Gin Bar is just down the street, whilst The Raven, one of Bath's best pubs, is opposite the hotel.

The main sights are all within strolling distance, and the train station is around a ten-minute walk away.

By car: 40 minutes from Bristol, just over an hour from Cardiff and 1 hour 30 minutes from Reading. There is limited on-site parking, at £14 per day.

By train: Bath Spa station is just 10 minutes away by foot, serviced by Great Western Railway with links to Gloucester (1 hour 20 minutes), Bristol Temple Meads (11 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 20 minutes). Book trains to Bath Spa.

THE FACILITIES

Staff are keen to please and owners Peter and Melissa O'Sullivan run the hotel with lots of enthusiasm. Though Harington's is smaller than many of Bath's bed and breakfasts, it has more facilities, along with a reception that is manned for long hours (until 11 pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends).
