Hotel Review
The Swan, Wedmore, Somerset
This 18th-century coaching inn occupies a prominent position in the village of Wedmore, on the edge of the Mendips. There is a long bar at the front and an airy restaurant at the back, which serves fresh and reliably good food beneath tremendously high ceilings. The garden is fringed by tall trees and includes a heated area with tables below a pergola. Upstairs are seven individually-designed rooms featuring local contemporary art. The hotel is part of a small chain and attracts people coming to explore the Mendips, Cheddar Gorge and Wells, as well as those on their way to Bristol.

Style & Character
The hotel suits people looking for neatened-up pub rooms that are affordable but also have photography and art to connect them to the local area. The cushion clouds that hang above diners' heads in the restaurant are a playful and inspired touch to celebrate the room's tall ceilings.
Service & Facilities
We liked that a fair-sized event space has been created from an unused building in the garden.

Rooms
The loft room has a pretty cottage feel, with dusky pinks and a freestanding bath under exposed wooden beams. The steps and corridors leading to the rooms slope and require guests to duck in places - this is an inn with a sense of history.

Food & Drink
There are always imaginative and tasty vegan options on the menu, such as mushrooms with potato and truffle terrine. Our favourite dish was the healthy and delectable confit courgette, with a black quinoa salad and courgette baba ganoush.
The Swan: pub restaurant, locally sourced produce, seasonal menus. Dishes include short rib cottage pie, pork ribeye and herb crusted trout. All-day menu, open daily.
