Hotel Review
Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide, La Orotava, Tenerife
The Milky Way seems awfully close when you stroll around Parque Nacional Las Cañadas del Teide at night. The hotel plays host to the yearly astronomical Starmus Festival, catering for visitors like Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Buzz Aldrin, Brian May and Brian Cox. Paradores de Turismo de España were set up by the Spanish king Alfonso XIII as a way of using historic buildings as tourist bait. Tenerife's Parador was built in 1962 but its stunning setting explains its inclusion in the Paradores programme. 1981 metres above sea level, it's not difficult to feel top of the world here. For much of the year, a stay here feels like holidaying in an out-of-season ski lodge, although some snow does fall.

Style & Character
Active tourists will heartily enjoy trekking the numerous well-signposted hiking trails situated in the Parque de Las Cañadas del Teide. If Planet Earth does eventually colonize other planets, a copy of this Alpine-style accommodation would look so good on Mars.

The two Junior Suites give you extra space via a separate living room. A bigger draw is the Teide-facing terrace. Use the rooms as bedrooms, getting out and about as much as you can before crashing after a full day.
