WHAT WE LOVE...

Standing in the picturesque grounds of Georgian Bowood House, Bowood Hotel is a purpose-built complex with a spa and golf course. The hotel was built around a decade ago, so does not have period appeal but guests have complimentary access to the historic house and its Capability Brown-designed parkland, with a lake, terraced rose gardens and adventure playground. The latter attracts families and can keep them entertained for hours. Adult guests will come for the PGA golf course, the woodland rhododendron trail or the spa treatments. However, there is much more to see and do here, the grounds are beautiful and Lacock - a National Trust-owned village - is a short drive away.

By train: London Paddington to Melksham (via Swindon or Westbury) takes around 1 hour 45 minutes. It's a 15-minute taxi ride to the hotel. thetrainline.com

The hotel suits golfers and families who want a country location with a spa attached. The terraced gardens that look towards the lake are dotted with rose bushes and crowned with statues of great stone stags.

The broad terrace is a convivial place for alfresco dining when doors are flung open to the park in summer. We loved the crab lasagne, which was colourful, delicate, flavoursome and neatly presented.

Shelburne Restaurant: 2 AA Rosette-awarded restaurant, modern British cuisine. Open Mon-Sat for all-day dining. Sunday lunch served 12-2:30pm.
Clubhouse Bar: informal lounge and bar. Classic British dishes such as fishcakes and ham, egg & chips. All-day dining, open daily.
