Hotel Review
Jorvik House, York
A well-preserved Georgian townhouse on the edge of York's historic old centre, the Jorvik House hotel is the perfect boutique option if you're looking for a moderately priced, funky-chic bolthole in the city. Overlooking the leafy paths of the Yorkshire Museum Gardens, it's handily placed for the city centre, which lies just the other side, and also for the station which is a ten-minute walk away across the river. There is a 24-hour reception, and overall the hotel does a good job of combining the quirkiness and conviviality of a city-centre guesthouse with the comfort and facilities of a mid-range hotel. It's an excellent, moderately priced alternative to a chain hotel option.
THE DETAILS
Location
We love the fact that it's a short walk to the best Italian restaurant in the city (perhaps the county?) - Enoteca by L'Uva on Bridge Street.
It's only a short stroll into the city centre, where you can find out more about the city's Viking past, visit the Minster or enjoy afternoon tea at Betty's tea rooms.
By car: around 45 minutes from Leeds, 1 hour 45 minutes from Manchester and 4 hours 15 minutes from London. Paid parking available nearby.
By train: London Kings Cross to York takes around 2 hours. The hotel is a 10-minute walk away. thetrainline.com
