Hotel Review
Malmaison York
In true Malmaison fashion, the company has re-purposed an unlikely building - a city-centre 1960s office block - into a fashionable hotel, but this time with a striking edgy feel rather than the typical Malmaison moody blues and purples. Full of bright colours and pop-art references, it feels youthful and fun, with a big open-plan bar-restaurant, and - a first for the city - a swanky rooftop bar. It's a big hotel - 150 rooms - so room décor is pretty standard throughout (room sizes vary) but it's bright and punchy, even if the semi-open bathrooms may not be to all tastes. Dining is either the standard Mal brasserie or Pan-Asian tapas in the rooftop bar; definitely worth booking a table here. And there's a small spa, plus 24-hour gym.

Style & Character
This is the hotel for the city-slicker who wants a high-energy weekend - or a cool place for a business meeting. The framed pop-art and Andy Warhol-print wallpapers raise the hotel above the standard corporate four-star.
Service & Facilities
Nowhere else in the city can compete with the rooftop bar with its staggering views across the city to the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales. Crazy as it sounds, we love the 24-hour gym - or, rather, the fact it's open 24 hours so we can pop in any time we feel the urge.
